hi everybody,I will greatly appreciate some advice from people with good mechanical experience.
it's about a 900 t8 year 1986 (engine B201 & 5 speed gearbox ).
The car has 280 000 kms/175 000 miles.
The gearbox is worn: 2nd pops, sometimes reverse too but not always, 5th won't go at all.
The engine itself was opened at 200 000 kms/125 000 miles to check cyl.&co. All was like new.We replaced the chain. So I consider the engine able to go 100k kms more without trouble.(the car has been driven very nice all the time).
Now for the gearbox: I will avoid to pay the very expensive price for a new one from Saab.Instead I can get cheap engine/gearbox at 150 000 kms /94 000 miles. So I can extract and change the gearbox or make my life easier and replace the whole block. (it's very hard to find only the gearbox and it costs about the same price, at least here in Europe).
I am wondering if it will be better to go along with the original engine at 280 000 kms or just throw it away for one at 150 000 kms which I don't know the way it was used (it is just tested ok at the reseller's workplace).
Will some compression test on the actual engine make the decision ?
thanks for any good advice !
