first thing I would check is the pin on the bottom of the shift lever/handle. This pin gets bodged when people try to shift into reverse without pulling the collar or conversly trying to shift out of reverse without pulling up on the collar.
Pull the shift boot up and you will see three screws holding the shifter ball. If these screws are loose that could be part of your problem.
Remove these screws and you can lift out the shift lever mechanism. If the ball is cracked or the pin at the bottom is bent or broken off that is the problem. Replace the shifter balls if necessary. If just pin problems proceed.
If you are halfway lucky, the only thing wrong is a bent pin. This pin is threaded into the shifter and it must be adjusted to the right length to follow the template at the bottom, which you can see now that the shift lever is out. If the pin is bent use a vice-grip, vice or c-clamp to straighten it out. If the a bit of the tip is sheared off you can extend the pin by removing the cotter pin like clip and turning the pin to extend it. I can't find the spec length, but you can, by trial and error get it long enough to ride properly in the grooves. You can tell when it is too long, because it will rub against the template. Back off until it just doesn't rub.
Sometimes the template that the pin rides in gets damaged. If so you have to get a good used one and pull the whole shifter mechanism out. Not a horrible project, but you might not want to tackle it as a rookie. there are also bushings that position the horizontal shift rod that goes towards the engine, which can casue sloppy shifting. Try the pin adjustment first...very common.
