You might have a few different things going on.
Worn ball joints and A-arm bushings can give you those symptoms.
Bad bushings or a busted mount on the Panhard rod can make it feel really floaty and unresponsive to the steering wheel.
Check to see if the front wheel lugs are tight. (BTDT)
Excessive toe-in or toe-out can make the steering response pretty strange, too.
One really crude way I've checked toe is by driving a short distance so you know that the steering wheel setting is sfor straight ahead. Then getting a couple of same-sized bricks, putting them behind the front wheels and measuring the distance between the outside tread of the wheels, and putting them in front of the wheels and doing the same measurement. You'll see if it's off.
