If anyone is thinking of giving it a try don't let the level of difficulty stop you. Mine was starting to smoke and and I found a good used one
in a self service salvage yard.
The water cooled Garrett is the same as ones on the '87's and older 900's except for the too coolant lines. The upper coolant line comes from the intake manifold between the injectors of cylinders 3 & 4 and the lower coolant line runs down to the lower radator hose and attaches near the radiator. I had to change the lower radiator hose as it has a smaller hose molded into it that attaches to the coolant line that runs to the turbo. Luckily, the '87 has a threaded plug that the banjo bolt for the upper coolant line attaches to.
It urned out to be alot easier than I thought. Most difficult part was changing the lower radiator hose. I wouldn't remove a good turbo (my old one lasted 175k) just to get the water cooled turbo, but if you need to replace your old oil cooled one, a water cooled one is certainly worth the extra work involved.
