I am surprised that anyone is surprised about the rating in Consumer Reports. And the relationship between the control of SAAB by GM and its rise in CR ratings should be no surprise also. In fact, being the good engineers that they are I am surprised that SAAB isn't higher on the "good cars" list.
Let's face it, CR attempts to objectively measure things and publishes the measurements. They lapse into a subjective miasma and tell people that some of these measurements are good and some are bad. For those who want to be led around by the nose, this is great. The common Japanese-marqued or American car has (IMHO) an extremely frightening ride that to those who I mentioned above as having proboscine directional dysfunction believe to be good because CR said it was so. Or to put it succinctly, me and CR have different ideas on what is good. I have had a BMW 2002, countless Volvos and motorcycles, access to many other "high-performance" vehicles and not-so and the conclusions I have reached about ride quality would fill a book. A short quip of a phrase such as "tight and busy" leave me wondering the type of controlled substance the person was using. I generally ignore such assessments since that may be one on the most important things I leave to my own judgement.

On the other hand, some people restrict their use of CR to supplier of real test information and not the nonsense put out by the manufacturers. For them it simplifies the data gathering chore for quick comparisons.
I could go on forever but suffice it to say that GM may have taken some of the raw edge off the SAAB animal.
