Battery/Connections

In trying to determine the source of my dead battery/connection issue, I began checking connections/ground etc.(battery appeared dead as dead, barely able to light dash gauge lights). I did not notice any visible breaks, corrosion, etc. and I do not have any testing equipment, but I grabbed hold of some wires (battery cables, alt.lead, alt. grounds) and moved around to see if anything was loose, nothing appeared loose. Just out of curiousity, I tried starting the car and it fired right up(it was dead for a week!). I was going to leave running for awhile so I shut the hood, once I did that it, stalled and acts like it has the dead battery again. I tried to determine what connection it was by moving the wires again with no luck, than it got to cold to try anymore. Any ideas on what connection it might be aside from towing it to the shop?
