Typically with head gasket failure, one or more of the water coolant channels that are bored into the aluminum head (the flow passing from the engine block, through the gasket to the head and back again) become corroded, or the head warps/bows ever so much in the center, causing the pressurized coolant to first seep into the cylinders, possibly the oil channels. As the failure progresses over time, it becomes fairly obvious with unexpected loss of coolant, possibly evidence of water in the oil (sometimes you have to drain the engine oil to see that), billowing white smoke (steam) coming from your tailpipe, exhaust bubbles in the coolant reservoir. There is a test you can have a technician perform to determine if there is exhaust gas in your coolant. No treatment that I know of exists to help stop or delay head gasket failure. If there is, it will probably just create another problem. What I did when I realized I had a head gasket problem with my aging turbo car was to avoid turbo boost acceleration. The added pressures while under boost only worsens the problem.
