Funny, mine ('86 900S) broke last fall, jsut in time to use the heater :-(
I assumed that the problems I've read about here applie: Heater core, cable, etc.
It turned out to be simpler than that for me:
The control knob is a press-fit on a D-shaft. Over 18 yrs, the mating hole to the D-shaft had become rounded, and the knob no longer turned the shaft.
The control knob comes right off the shaft (remember, it's a press-fit), so my lo-tek solution is to cary a pair of slip-joint pliers in the door storage bin, and adjus the heat by pulling the knob, turning the shaft, then pressing the knob back on.
You may laugh, but it works for me ;-).

BTW, if anyone has a parts car with a functioning, non-stripped, heater control knob, I'd be interested ;-).
