The literal translation of detent is trigger or release. I happen to collect and fix old watches (as well as saabs), and in the watch world, the detent is the mechanism that allows the stem and crown to be pulled between the winding and time setting positions. As it relates to the shifter, I can only imagine that it relates to the plastic notch on the shifter ball at the end of the rod. For the life of me, I cannot envision how one could install this "backwards" without resorting to brutal force. Moreover, after having made such a mistake, I am equally surprised that this wouldn't have manifested itself during a test drive
See how the car behaves after they have "fixed" it. I would also ask to see what parts, if any, they replaced. I am very skeptical of this answer...
