We used to be a 2 Saab family. An 89 900 NA for her and a 91 900 NA for me. Then the kids came so we needed a 4 door and we got a new Passat wagon for her about 2 years ago. At a about the same time, I realized my boyhood dream and got an 89 911 as my toy. So here were are with two drivers in the family and 4 cars. She pretty much only drives her Passat so that leaves me with 3 cars.

I use the 89 (152k miles) mainly as my dedicated mountain bike/surf car and thought I would keep it as a backup when I needed to do some work on my 91. The 91 has 165k miles and I was expected the transmission to need some attention within the next couple of years. Just had my mechanic look at it and he says the car is solid. So there goes that justification. Obviously, I can use my 91 just as good for biking and surfing. Financially it does not make a big difference on the annual family budget ($40 for registration and about $300 for insurance). Parking space is not a real problem either.

The 89 is pretty solid with respect to engine (revs very well and uses no oil) and transmission (rebuilt at 70k). However, the car has been running very poorly for about 2 years now and I can’t figure it out. Idle is perfect and it runs well at higher RPM but the acceleration at lower RPM is weak and has lots of hesitation. Also, I have seen an increase in fuel consumption (from 26 to about 23mpg). Things that were changed over the last couple of years include AMM, O2 sensor, Hall sensor, ECU, AIC valve, fuel pump, FPR. I have also done other things such as cleaning ground contact points and given a complete tune-up. The problem might go away for a little (such as when I replace the O2 sensor) but comes right back. Also, the ECU is shot again and I have installed a switch to turn the fuel pump on until I can find a new unit on e-Bay.

So what do I do?
- Donate the car to charity as is (I would probably save about $500 on my taxes if I claim a value of $1500)
- Continue to drive the car until it falls apart
- Spend more money and time so I can sell it (probably would get $1000 for it, if I’m lucky)
- Spend more money and time so I can keep it even I don’t have the need for it

I just don’t know what to do. Rationally I think I should dump the car as is but it kills me because the body has no rust, interior in decent shape, and engine and transmission are solid. On the other hand, trying to fix it is going to cost more money and I’m never going to see that back with the current glut in used cars on the market.

What do you guys think?
