No boost!

My wife lost power in her 85 900T with auto on her way home yesterday. Says she then heard rough-bearing type noises and occasionally a high-pitched whine reminiscent of a plugged vacuum cleaner. Barely made it up our long, 30-degree driveway by starting up it at a higher than normal speed.
I took her car for a drive, and, you guessed it – no boost. Gauge goes up to atmospheric and no further. I had to BACK up the driveway to make it home.
So, I “simplified“ the system with the intent of isolating the problem. I connected the air-mass meter directly to the intake manifold (bypassing the air cleaner). I pulled the turbo air-intake pipes so I could see the shaft and impeller. I unplugged the waste-gate pressure line (and checked that the lever was in the gate-closed position – rod all the way out, and visually correct).
Result, turbo shaft feels normal when spun by fingers. Axial play perhaps more than I’d accept in new unit. Turbo shaft spins and accelerates when RPM is increased – although it seems to have a jiggle above 3000 RPM. When everything was reconnected (intercooler, but not air cleaner), and with waste-gate pressure hose still off, there is still no boost. I haven’t checked for a suddenly blocked catalytic converter, or other impediment downstream of the turbo.
I’ve never had any boost problems in a Saab, so I’m a newbie on this one. Any suggestions?
