The 8 valve hood has a cross member that will rub against the engine on a 16 valve engine. Eventually it will try to cut through the front of the valve cover. 16 valve engine hoods were made with a recessed area to accomodate the larger 16 valve-valve cover. 16 valve engine hoods are backward compatible, but 8 valve engine hoods are not forward compatible unless you are willing to grind out that cross member and leave a weak spot that also needs to be painted.
Ask me how I know.
Best of luck.
