If the steering is stiff and has periodic lumpy spots, the U-joint might need some WD-ro or PBlaster penetrant and heating with a hair dryer helps to soften up the greese in the joint. You can get to this ujoint easily: by kneeling next to the open driver's door and reaching under the dash to pull up the rubber boot right where the steering shaft goes through the floor board/firewall.
However, I suspect you might have other problems. First pull the front center hubcaps and check the lug nuts and the big center axle nuts for tightness. Lug nuts are 19mm and center nut is 32mm (1 1/4"). If the axle nut is loose, you will likely need a new wheel bearing and perhaps a hub.
Then check the tie-rod ends for tightness. These can be easily checked by turning the front wheels from side to side to alternately expose the tie rod ends behind each front wheel. You can grab the steering rack shaft and turn it/yank on it. If there is any play or the tie rod end seems loose at its joint, replace the offending tie-rod end. Usually the passenger side goes most often.
If none of those tests turn up a problem, you should check the balljoints. This is best done by jacking up each front corner with spacers between the upper control arms and the body(old spark plugs work fine) to remove spring tension from the joints. Then squeeze each joint with large channel lock pliers to check for play. Also pry them horizontally with a big screwdriver ofr a tire iron to check for play. Passenger side balljoints usually goe most often.
While checking balljoints also check control arm bushings. If the rubber is torn up or you can move the joint with a tire iron, the bushings mneed to be replaced.
All of the above are common maintenance items.
