There's a short black ground wire from the alternator body to (???) I thought it went directly to the block; maybe at the alternator mounting bracket. Make sure that one's OK.
I don't have that car anymore, but I kinda remember a ground wire from the throttle body over to the fender. Maybe it went to a hold-down bracket for a brake line?
The BIG wire sounds like the throttle cable, not an electrical wire at all.
There isn't a separate adjustment for the alternator belts. Check the alternator mounting bracket. Maybe the rubber bushings are shot, and the alternator isn't really parallel to the crank. If that's not it, replace both belts together; try to get a matched pair.
