The automatic transmission most definately DOES NOT have the same fluid as the engine.
The engine oil and filter should be changed every 3000-5000 miles, assuming 'conventional' (non-synthetic) oil. Some may quibble that 3K is too soon, but that's my recommendation. If you use synthetic oil, you can change it at longer intervals, but I still recommend replacing the filter every 3-5K miles. Since the filter holds up to a quart of oil, you'll need to add more after a filter change.

Autotranny - unless you have service records showing the last time the tranny was flushed, haave it flushed. I'm not sure the recommended fluid for a 900 tranny - the manual should say, but I'll bet it's Dextron II. Since it's hard to get Dextron II these days, use Dextron III.

If you drain the fluid out of the tranny using the drain plug, you only get about 1/2 the fluid in the tranny. The rest is trapped in the torque converter. You've got some choices. One is to drain out whatever comes out, and pour in fresh. How much to pour in? Measure how much pours out. Then drive the car for a week or so, and repeat. This won't get all the old fluid out, but it gets most out. It's good to do tranny fluid every 20-25K miles. Some may say sooner.
The other method is a flush, and this takes a shop. Some shops have the ability to actually hook the tranny up to a pump, and pump out the old fluid while pumping in new. This does a complete replacement. Is it necessary? Don't know - simple changes have worked for me. It'd be a nice touch.

Of course, coolant should be flushed every 2-3 years, and replace the thermostat at the same time. Brake fluid should be flushed every 2 years, three tops. These aren't just numbers for Saabs - these are good numbers for any car.

There are gearboxes and differentials, typically in manual tranny cars and rear-wheel drives. In the automatic Saabs, the differential is part of the automatic tranny. So change engine oil for the engine, automatic transmission fluid for the transmission.
