i did the same on my rustheap. bodyshop friend said to simply cut the affected parts, and leave as much metal as possible. Assuming you've got rusted wheel wells, etc, he suggested cutting vertically down from the rear window, and horiz. just above where the rust ends.
You have to decide how far back you want to cut. depends if there is rust at the back end of the q-panel or not, and if you want to replace it there.
once cutting , you cut the new piece to fit and weld in. good welders/bodymen will overlap the sheets for stronger join.
i actually have two rear q panels in good shape from an 83, they are black but have been primed around the edges to prevent rust . if u need, what side do you need and where are you located. a new 'sail panel ' is well over a grand .
