It may be your timing chain. Those symptoms are similar to the ones I had before changing the upper chain guide in the valve cover. Put the tip of a long screwdriver on the portion of the valve cover that is over the camshaft sprockets. Put the handle against your ear. Have someone rev the car and listen for the chain slapping on the pad in the valve cover. If it has never been changed, there is a good chance it has gotten very hard, causing excess noise. Mine was as hard as a rock and the engine is much quieter with the new one. While you are checking the pad, check to make sure your chain tensioner has not extended to the limit (11mm) and also check that the camshaft timing marks line up when cylinder #1 is at TDC. If both these things are OK, then your chain is most likely fine. The upper chain guide is only $6 at eEuroparts.com. If it's been a while, change your valve cover gasket as well. Together, you're only talking about $20.
