When the car is cold and making the racket, get a long screwdriver and hold the handle end against your ear, while you run the tip along the valve cover. If the noise is loudest right back near the firewall, chances are you have a bad damper pad for the timing chain. These pads get hard and the chain will make a rattle/tapping noise. Easy to slip in a new pad. Good idea to repalce valve cover gaskets at the same time. Jim at Sobstory(site sponsor) has the pads and gaskets.
If the noise is from the lifters, I would try a bottle of marvel mystery oil or a pint of dextron III in the oil. This will dissolve any gum/gunk that might be causing the lifters to stick. If that doesn't work, then you can find the bad lifters and replace them.
