Kinda long...
I've been forced to get "the precious" up and running again (or the wife was going to have it towed) and thought I would pass along some helpful info on a clutch replacement for those who've haven't done it before...like me.
The car had a massive shudder when taking off and I pretty much burnt the clutch getting it home last time. Through a litte advice and maybe some bad assumptions of my own, I figured it was the throw out bearing. Got a clutch kit and went to work on removing slave and pressure plate. I didn't have the special tool but discovered unshielded copper grounding wire (4mm in dia., 8 gauge I believe) worked great...I found this out on the installation. Since I was putting in a new pressure plate I cut the fingers, 4 of them, with a rotary tool to get it out easier.
Putting it in was another story. I didn't know I had so many off-color words in my vocabulary. There is no easy trick to this (none that I found anyway) but I read where someone used zip ties to hold the slave, release bearing and pressure plate(with homemade tool) together and that did the job. I didn't tie down the clutch plate because the ties weren't long enough and I don't think I could have gotten it back in anyway if the clutch plate wasn't able to move freely. I made sure to get all the tie pieces out before getting it to far onto the flywheel. It also helped cutting down the allen wrench to get to the hex nuts on the slave.
I am prying to the Nordic gods that it was the T/O bearing and not the transmission that was the culprit. I'll find out tomorrow as I have to replace a grommet??? that I tore putting the piping back together. But if anyone can give some help advice as to what may also cause a massive shudder type feel when taking off, as well as difficulty engaging in other gears it would be GREATLY appreciated. TIA!
