did I kill the distributor?

Hi People,
OK, the story began when I was replacing the distributor cap. When I was done I reconnected the wires and tried to crank the engine. I was supprised when the engine didn't start. I could only feel a strong vibrations while cranking, like the the engine "did want to kick off but could not". Like running on 3 cylinders or something.
Guess what it was, yeah - the reason was as stupid as the wires (no 2 and 3) reconnected in a wrong order.
Anyway, I made it correct and the engine was back alive. But there's one thing that worries me:
strange clicking/knocking (irregular but frequent) sounds/noises (similar to those when you check a spark plug by moving it close to the engine block with the wire on) are produced somewhere around the distributor (inside?) - best heard when idling and playing with the gas pedal. The second symptome is irregular idling like some sparks are lost.
What can be the problem? Is that a result of cranking the engine with wires fitted in a wrong way? What else could have been damaged by that. How can I fix it?
Thank you for any clues.
Greets,
Pit
