Two things two make an 89 tranny work in an 84. The front covers need to be swapped from the old one to the new one. (1989 cars have hydraulic motor mounts in the front, the 84 does not). The other thing is that the centering spring is internal on the 89 and external on the 84, all you would have to do is disconnect the centering spring at the front of the shifter housing. Ok, a few things...you will need to either swap the drivers over from the old transmission to the new, or get a hold of 1989 driveshafts and use the shaft and the inner tripod joint. The drivers are bigger in 89 than 84.
