I had to go through this decision a few years back when the 1985 900 that I had purchased new needed its second transmission rebuild in 2000. I had put 15 years and over 300,000 miles on that car and was very reluctant to part with it. However, the body had suffered badly from minor collisions and rust over the years, so I made the tough decision to get another car -- a real nice '86 900 that cost about half the price of the tranny rebuild.
Then that car was totalled in a collision with an SUV (no personal injuries!), so I went out and bought another, a 1986 900S. That car wound up needing a transmission rebuild, but everything else was in good condition and the body was clean and straight, so this time I went ahead and put the money into it and am glad I did. In addition to the transmission, most of the things that typically go wrong have been repaired (steering rack, front engine seal, vibration damper, front brake calipers, etc.) so the car drives practically like new and is very reliable with 200,000 miles on the clock. (The nice thing is that while driving this car I can hardly tell the difference from my original '85, it has that nice, comfortable, familiar feeling. :-)
So for what it's worth, my take having gone through this is that if the body and chassis are still in good condition I would go ahead and fix the mechanicals. But if the car is bent and rusty, you are probably better off getting another. The good news is that if you get another C900 you will still have that silly grin on your face that you had when driving the old one. :-) :-)
