Crankshaft Oil Seal Question

I am in the middle of replacing my Crankshaft Pulley and have followed the excellent advice posted on this Board and Townsend, so far with no problems. I am currently stalled waiting for an Oil Pump O-Ring/Seal which is supposed to arrive Monday (actually it was supposed to be here Friday - sigh!).
Anyway, my question is about the Crankshaft Oil Seal. The one that came out was (originally) white and I read somewhere that these were the original fitment from the factory. I also remember comments that there had been a number of changes in this Oil Seal over the years. How do I know I'm getting the latest or best design from my supplier? When I picked up the parts yesterday my supplier had two seals in stock. A white one that had grooves around the outside surface (circumference) and a black one that was smooth around the outer surface. I chose the black one as I thought that the white seal was probably an original design, but now I'm having second thoughts.
Can anybody tell me how to identify the correct or best Oil Seal to use? I really don't want to do this job again for a looong time!
Thanks
Andy.
