The odometer on my 83 900 was doing the same thing. I don't know what year yours is but mine was all mechanical, no electrical bits in the speedo or odometer(except for cruise). I took the speedo out and tried to fix but the gears on the odometer were slipping on the bar that turns them, no way to fix it. if the speedo is eratic it probably means u need a new spring in it. easier just to replace the whole unit. i got a used instrument cluster from an autowrecker for like 30 bucks CDN. now it works fine, but the tach doesn't. next job is to put my old tach back in with the new speedo/odometer. good luck
