5-speed shifting suggestion

My 88 900T has almost 200k miles on it, and it didn't shift perfectly. It was a little slow getting into 2nd and 3rd but worked fine. I figured it was just getting old and with the amount I thrash the car, I was doing good to get that kind of service out of it. While working on the car last Saturday, I decided to check the gearbox oil. It was about 1/4" down from line. (maybe half a quart?).
I stuck a tube down the dipstick hole and pumped out a little more than 2 quarts of oil. (pumping it out probably isn't as effective as draining it, but it's easy and quick) It was black and as far as I know, it hasn't been changed in the 70,000 miles that I've owned the car. I put in 2.5 quarts of new 10w30 to bring it back to even with the line on the dipstick.
All the gears engage more quickly, smoothly, and neatly now. It's a vastly good bang-for-the-buck improvement for the roughly $4 worth of oil it took to refill. If you don't remember when your 5-speeds oil was changed, give it a try.
