Many times vaccuum leaks do not present themselves until the engine is warm. Some of these leaks could be as small as a pinhole, and when the rubber in the hosing becomes soft from the heat of the engine, the pinhole expands, causing a greater leak.
Also, might a vaccuum hose be unattached somewhere, or could one of the plastic T-fittings be broken, yet not noticeable until you touch it?
A vaccuum leak could definitely cause the conditions you are experiencing.
Best bit to rule out a leak would be to replace all tubing, and given the age of your car, it might not be a bad thing to do.
