If you're concerned about avoiding difficult, costly repairs you might do best to find a 89+ with the newer style pinion bearing in the transmission - a new or even a rebuilt transmission is expensive and difficult to install.
While driving around town the difference between 8v and 16v is not noticable. Turbochargers aren't inherently unreliable, but do add complexity to the engine. If you're taking the car to a mechanic for repairs he should be competent enough for the difference to be unimportant.
I think the biggest headache with old cars is that generally all of the suspension components are worn out. While not expensive in and of themselves, A-arm bushings, ball joints, and tie rod ends are unpleasant to replace.
The only axiom I'd try to follow is to avoid rust and automatic transmissions.
