-Finally is the $3000+ estimate appropriate? Or should I just sell the car? Btw-- everything else is in good shape on the car and the car had been driving well before this.
regretfully, yes, this is about what it costs to get a new tranny in. you could find it for a bit less. you could buy two of these cars in great condition for that much money. if you have good interior and parts on your car, you can find one that is the same year or at least mostly compatible with your current car that is a bit rough around the edges but otherwise mechanically sound- make sure the engine and transmission are in good shape, etc. then you can take out your favorite parts from the old one and build the new one up to a more restored state. you could take off a bunch of the other parts and sell them on ebay to get quite a bit of your money back on the car and then call the junkyard to come get the old car when you are done. they may charge you about $50 or so to take it, but then again they may even give you $50. i'm looking to find a nice parts car myself where i can pull off the interior and a few other parts for my '89T conv. that i am restoring. i found the car (Stella) with 4" of water on the floorboards and a ripped top with the windows rolled 1/3 of the way down and a dead battery. jumped the car, started it up, wrote the lady a check for $300 and got down the road. very quickly, i might add due to the very strong motor and the turbo. it has bad cv's and a couple other things but nothing too major and i'm real excited about getting it up to snuff. but for $300, with a strong motor and tranny, i can't really go wrong. just find one that is not aesthetically pleasing and replace everything with your good stuff. people sell cars for ridiculous prices sometimes. and then there is the broken tranny cars that have everything else in perfect shape. put the two together and you've got a nice machine. that's what i'd do if i were you. btw is your car black? do you live anywhere near CA? i could be interested if you decided to sell it cheap.
