... especially when you can get a very good Sony or Pioneer for $150 with the most popular features. I know that my friend and I installed a Pioneer CD/receiver in his 900 and it had the antenna activation thing you mentioned -- you just have to hook it up right when you install it.
If you're going to recommend expensive ones, I'd go for Eclipse. My car came (used, of course) with the CD/receiver and front speakers replaced by the previous owner with Eclipse stuff (there was also an amp and a sub). Eclipse is quite expensive (my deck was ~$300 when they got it ... 4 years ago?, and features-wise, would probably be worth $200-250 now if bought new), but they're of excellent build quality. And the volume/settings dial (NOB, they call it) is just great. You wouldn't think it matters, until you use one -- then you notice that the slightly soft rubber, the backlight, and the resistance are all perfect. The display is also good because it's dot-matrix, bright white-blue text on black background, which makes for great visibility even in direct sunlight. It's also got a MUTE button, which is something I'd look for.
Eclipse also has this system where you can program a "KEY CD" (essentially the deck memorizes the CD's table of contents) so that whenever the battery power gets disconnected, you have to insert the CD in order to reactivate the deck. You can use a custom burned CD, too. This way, theoretically, the deck is less desireable to thieves (assuming thieves know about this system). Don't now how effective it really is, but it's an interesting approach to the theft issue.
Eclipse isn't a big name, though, and not something you'll find at Best Buy. I just thought I'd put my plug in for them if we're going to recommend Alpines :)
