You already lowered the timing, which is one trick to lower Nox.
Just a partially clogged radiator could be enough.
Have you tighten the 7mm ground nut at the back of temp gauge to make sure that the gauge is actually showing the correct reading?
A loose ground make the gauge read lower.
On a 17 year old cat, any and every little thing can kill it, or at least lower it's working performance.
Heck, we now have cars built in the 2000 and up that kills the cat right away with a misfire from a bad DI cassette (if you read the 9-3 and 9-5 board?)
