OK, you couldn't have told me this!
I switched to Sunoco 94 on the old 87 900T that I've had for 10-11 years, 265K miles on the body, some 65K miles on the rebuilt engine and auto transmission. I've consistently averaged about 21-22 mpg going from home to work some 35-38 miles one way, sometimes 80-85mph around the DC beltway early in morning and same on the way home (crazy fast in PG county....and I WASN'T in the left hand lane!).
I noticed the SPG9 apc box would work well but wouldn't always hold the half-red boost (about 17+psi when I put a gauge on it) but I figured it was an rpm taper thing. Well, apparently the knock sensor was sensing and it would drop the boost and probably retard spark too.
Switched to Sunoco 94 (betcha the stuff is closer to 98 but I can't test it!) and the apc holds boost all the way to red line (some fierce hissing like a vacuum cleaner from that little airhorn air cleaner inlet on the left...have to put the K&N back in there!).
The icing on the cake was the 26mpg and close to 400 miles on a tank!!
Oh well...betcha that automatic trans won't last another 64K miles now!!
I'm going to put the SPG9 rising rate fuel pressure regulator back on and see what happens. I had taken it off when I had emissions problems and they turned out to be a worn out cat.
