Man, you didn't just flunk. You FLUNKED. You should pass the HC test with flying colors. It shouldn't even be close. So I'm thinking you're in full limp-home mode. In other words, a sensor (or two) have failed and the engine is running on full rich to protect itself. Use the board's Search feature to learn about pulling trouble codes off the computer. That will point you in the right direction.
The only other fault might be a wicked lean misfire but usually the CO would be lower in that case. Check that connector to the AMM, though.
Also, if you don't have a Bentley Manual for 16-valve engines, now is the time to pick one up. You'll save a ton of time and money.
This problem is fixable so don't worry. You'll have at least five other responses before you wake up tomorrow morning.
