Same car- same problem.
Gauge is probably not related to leak/smell- chances are it is just stuck. Pull wood panel out of trunk, pop off plastic covers, believe guage sending unit is on the right and pump is on the left. Check for fuel here; clean area 1st; reseat gaskets (better have new ready). If you have standing fuel- replace gaskets. While the fuel bobber/sending unit is out- test for continuity and make sure the float moves freely.
The smell/spill is probably a cracked tank- on the top and along a seem. Can;t say with scientfic proof, but it seems this model is notrorious. I know of 4 (you would make 5) cracked tanks on CEs. Another idea- follow filler neck to tank and look for cracks.
As far as safety- probably won't blow up, but it's the fumes that cause the problem. Fill to less than 3/4 of a tank (after you fix gauge). Patching is OK- better off getting a replacement (used is fine).
