Good question - the same thing happened to a friend's '90 900S at 86k miles 7 years ago. The chains usually last longer than the rest of the car - at least into the 250k mile range.
It may be something as simple as a manufacturer's defect in the chain, but that would be hard to prove. You'd want to look for things like broken or excessively worn chain guides and take a look at the chain link(s) that broke.
They changed the timing chain tensioners from hydraulic to spring-loaded sometime around mid '86 (someone correct me if I'm wrong). But the '89 definitely has the later tensioner, so unless somebody removed the spring (not an easy or subtle task at all), that shouldn't have caused the breakage.
What's your oil change frequency? Anybody do any head work on the engine such that they might have turned the engine with one of the cams instead of the crankshaft or flywheel?
