So the new 16V donor engine is sitting on blocks in my work space. I began dismantiling the clinically dead engine before dark. Got as far as the intake system and throttle body connections. I now have an idea what happened to the 8V. I reached in to give the turbo a spin and was stunned to feel incredible play in every direction , plus the sound of squeeking. Before I began dismantling I had to move the car from one place to another. I decided to give it one more breath of life and started it up enough to be able to manuever less than 20 feet to a spot where I could coast the remainder of the distance. Same horrendous noise, still no power.
So after seeing the condition of the turbo, I think what may have happened was an oil pump failure, or a blockage. While I do have a dash oil pressure guage and the last time I looked it was fine, perhaps there was a sudden failure at some point along the 300 mile round trip the previous weekend. It then took another 50 or 60 miles since then to give up inside, along with the turbo unit. I can buy that theory since I don't have my oil pressure idiot light connected. The connector broke some time back and I thought the o.p. guage would serve just as well. The last time I can recall looking at the o.p guage would have been on the trip up the coast, but not back since it was at night and the guage light is too dim to see. If at that point the pressure developed a problem, from that point forward it took the remaining miles to drive home, plus less than 60 miles around town running errands and that last long climb up a two mile hill on a very warm day to finally die. That's what I'm writing on the death certificate.
I may be pulling this tranny on the old engine, and then I might be able to see more inside. I did remove the valve cover the day after the engine died to see if I could detect anything. Everything looked normal, but I also thought it looked as though there was less oil than usual. The lifters rotated freely, so I didn't know what to think there. No evident damage to the camshaft. Perhaps the head was lubricated but the turbo and main engine bearing channel became blocked. I don't know if that's even possible. Perhaps one of you good readers can shed light on that aspect of the engine.
Tommorow the 16V goes into the old chassis!
