Hope this helps:

the first engine/tranny my buddy and i pulled out, we unscrewed the whole transfer case cover and started trying to figure out how we were going to get that shaft out. we saw some snap rings around the shaft on the top sprocket but they were pretty ugly to get to.

then i realized that we were goign about it the wrong way, and we pulled back and did some reading and realized all we had to do was yank on the shaft to get it out. it seats in the flywheel bearing at the far end, and obviously the clutch disc as well.

So, reason for reminiscing like this is that one of the other posters jogged my memory when he mentioned the ring(s) that the shaft snaps into and out of.

I suspect that your tranny is now missing that snap ring, or else someone did like we were trying to do, and loused up that snap ring, trying to get it out! Or, you are going too far in with the shaft and are missing 'sweet spot' where the locking ring is and its not getting a chance to grab.

worst case scenario, id suggest you contact your closest Saab dealer (or a good indie shop if any nearby) and hopefully they can provide you with some advice or at least the missing part and how to reinstall.

you will have to drive or tow the car to such a shop and have them rectify it.
