Sounds like the shaft is rusted to the body. Never happened to me, but who knows. The shaft has to come out from the top and usually, you just lift it out. If stuck, I would get the "special dealer only tool" out. I would drill 3/8" hole into the barrel of a baseball bat and slide it over the shaft stub and pound on the other end of the bat with a large hammer. Bet it pops right out.
