Could be a bad bushing in the shift linkage housing, a bad shifter shaft coupling, or maybe something as simple as a worn pin on the bottom of the shift lever.
The first thing I would check is the pin adjustment. You can doi this yourself. Pull up the shifter boot and unscrew the screws that hold the ball. Lift the shift lever up and out. At the bottom, you will see a pin. These get worn with time or bent if the car is forced in/out of reverse without the pulling the collar. You pull out a clip and then you can turn the pin so it extends a bit more. When adjusted properly, it will ride in the guides on the bottom plate. Further, you should also check the condition of the grooves in the bottom plate to make sure thay are not bodged or have junk in them.
To inspect the shift rod coupling, get under the car and locate the shift rod that goes into the transmission. Inspect and pull on the coupling to see if it's sloppy. This is an easy fix at a shop
If the pin or the coupling doesn't identify or doesn't solve the problem, then you have to pull the console and get to the shifter mechanism to replace the bushing that keeps the rod steady in the car. Not beyond the diyer, but easy for a shop.
