Failure of the speedometer itself is unusual, but not unheard of. (Odometers kinda drop like flies after a decade or so.) It might be something like a broken cable core or it might be that the plastic assembly attached to the transmission died for some reason - maybe the square hole that the cable core goes into rounded.
He probably did a similar ECU swap to one of the equivalents that I've found.
Good question as to what the wires from the fuse box are.
It sounds like a good driving, decently-running project car that still needs some maintenance.
Bill (whose last neme I don't know) posted about using a product called LPS3 as a rust preventative. He says that it leaves a waxy film which will repel water. If you get the car, you may want to pick some up and spray the inside areas around fender flares, hood (closed areas at the front and behind the side alignment pins), and the other rust-prone body areas. I wish that I'd known it with my cars back in Syracuse.
