I dug into my Bentley last eve (I meant to bring it with me today to properly cite and quote) and it essentially says that the gas cap is designed to PREVENT a vacuum in the fuel tank by use of a one-way valve.
An extensive search of this board shows that some states evidently require an airtight seal, so I'm wondering how this affects performance.
I think I'll play around with opening the gas cap every few days (or at least once a week) to equalize the pressure and see how that affects performance and efficiency. It probably won't make a bit of difference, but it will be fun to track.
My 83 900T (manual trans) seems to stall while idling in traffic when the fuel level is below 1/4, so that will be my primary parameter to track. It will sure raise a few eyebrows when I get our of my car in downtown Seattle gridlock rush hour traffic to crack my gas cap after the car stalls a couple of times....but, hey, that'll be part of the fun of it!
I'd be curious to hear the input from the guys who REALLY know, though.
