You need more information from the mechanic.
It can be a handful to replace the steering rack since it needs to be rotated around and passed by the left inner driver on drive shaft.
Automatic trannies are worse than manual during that procedure.
If motormounts are worn out it is more difficult.
If the car has been in an accident it can be almost impossible to rotate/remove steering rack if the engine has been pushed slightly backwards on its motormounts.
The check engine light could be due to that the oxygensensor has been covered with oil goo from steering rack.
Is it a non turbo?
Oxygen sensor sits very close to steering rack and it is a breather hole in the sensor to keep track of outside oxygen content. If that hole is covered with dirt the sensor cannot work properly.
