I definetly sounds like a bad electrical connection. Check to see if there are any loose conections at the battery or where the cables coming off the battery connect to. If you've never replaced your battery cables this may be someting to look into. If you have a volt meter or a test light you can check that the voltage at the positive battery terminal is the same as the voltage at terminal 30 on the starter. You might try conecting the tester to the starter terminal 30 and wiggling the red cable to see if anything changes. Also check the conection at terminal 50 on the starter. With your test device you should have voltage at this terminal when the key is in the crank position.
If you are set on finding and fixing the problem yourself, you'll benefit from having a copy of the Bently repair manual. In section 371-130 it gives you the steps for fault tracing the starting system.
