Fuel Guage going nuts

hi, have an 89 900 n/t
Fuel guage was stuck for a while, then no power at all for months, which I could live with.
However, now the fuel guage will 'spike' all the way up and all the way back down and continue to do this while I'm driving. It seems as if when I'm accelerating, it is more likely to shoot up.
It's kinda scary since the needle hits the top so hard I can hear it 'click' and then drops back down, don't want it to break.
I read in this forum others mentioning to take off left speaker cover and look for a screw the electrical wire attaches to the fuel guage. But when I look, I can only feel wiring harnesses that are attached to this fuel guage and it feels secure.
If anyone has any suggestions on where to look or what the cause may be, please let me know. thanks
p.s. forgot to mention how the fuel guage died in the first place was that I spilled a BUNCH of water in the ignition hole. But now out of nowhere, the needle goes nuts.
