The starter solenoid is fussy about sufficient voltage. All it takes is a bit of intermittent corrosion blockage to cut voltage enough to disable the solenoid. Ansers/Swedecar explained all this awhile back.
The first thing I would do is clean battery terminals, ground points(A/C crossmember and trans case), and the power connections on the back of the starter.
If you have a good digital meter, you can test this by comparing ignition off voltage across the battery terminals to the voltage between the hot solenoid terminal and the engine block. You should see about 12.6 volts at the battery and close to that at the starter. Bad grounds, cables, or connections can drop the voltage at the starter down to 10-11 volts.
