Whew! Maybe a good place to start would be to determine what you want to do with the car. The fact is that you could drive this car another 300,000 miles if you want to, and when compared to what you would spend in depreciation, it would actually be the cheap way to go. If you're a "churn'em and burn'em" kind of guy and looking to replace it with another cheap car that doesn't need a trans, you may very well find that with this approach you'll keep making the same repairs over and over again. If you're looking to get by for another six months and then sell the car, used is the way to go. If you want to keep the car for the long haul it might be worth investing in a rebuilt. Used can be a crap shoot, but with a brother inlaw mechanic who can do the work cheap, I'd go used.
