It's the transmission that will eventually fail. The engine is just fine.
John....it's me again...red convertible....Swedish Car Day. That particular is an automatic. I routinely drive between 75-85mph on the highway in that car. The rpms are high and it gets a little noisy but it is just fine. I don't dog it too much in the two lower gears though. I've thought about playing around with some upgrades but so far have just left it stock. It's still plenty of fun.
The main thing I beleive with the borg-warner auto box is just keeping the fluid clean. I change out what I can every time I change the oil....usually around 3.5 quarts. That keeps the fluid pretty fresh. So far(122K miles and 5 years) so good. I bought the car with 64K miles on it.
So if the cars you are looking at have good looking fluid in them (no burnt, brown stuff) and they shift smoothly then you should be OK. Don't let the automatic scare you away from a mint car. Besides, if the trans does fail at some point, you can always throw a 5-speed in at that point.
