Noisy cam followers?

I just took my engine apart to check it out and clean it up before installing a turbo (it was N/A). I had the head off, but did not disassemble the head or the block. I removed, cleaned, and reinstalled the oil pump (no measurable wear). I installed a new head gasket & reassembled the engine.
I got the turbo equipment installed, and started the engine.
Everything seems in order, but there is a lot of noise that sounds like cam followers. I probably have an hour of running time on the engine now and the noise has not gone away. It is loudest at idle and decreases as speed increases until it mostly goes away at around 2500 RPM.

I have pressed on each of the followers to check for "spongyness" (felt none), and I have gone through the oil system bleeding as described in the Bently book.

I don't have the general engine experience to know if I should be able to drive the car while I am trying to diagnose the problem, or if I should leave it parked.
Anyone have experience with this that might help me out?
Thoughts appreciated...
