You can get temporary relief, and more clutch slave travel, by pressure bleeding the clutch hycraulics.
If you're going to separate the transmission from the engine, it's not absolutely necessary to put the spacer in the pressure plate. You have to unbolt the slave and pressure plate, not to mention being careful when you separate the engine and trans. I've done it under the fairly primitive conditions in a pick-n-pull.
When you get ready to install the pressure plate, there are a number of fairly straightforward ways to compress the fingers to get the spacer in.
