Checking it out...
1) Make sure the alternator/battery idiot light comes on when you turn the key ON, before starting. If the bulb is burned out the alternator doesn't work.
2) Engine running, measure battery voltage. It should be about 14v or so. Turn ON everything you can - headlights, rear window heater, ventilation blower, windshield wipers... It should STILL be about the same. If this is OK then your alternator is good.
3) After driving around (so it's charged up) turn it off, wait maybe 3 minutes, & measure battery voltage. It should be 12v or 12.5v. Then disconnect the negative battery cable & wait overnight. It should still measure 12v or so. If it drops, it's a bad battery (internal load).
4) If you've got this far, now you're looking for some component that doesn't turn off. Stereo? Trunk light? Motorized seatbelts? Post back & we can explain more. Better yet, search. I remember posting some stuff about measuring current draw when the car's turned off. (When you THINK it's turned off...)
