The opening above where the teeth of flywheel is visible is to check timing.
But in that same (sort of square) opening is also a round hole where the probe for the Saab tool ISAT is inserted to check the timing.
That tool is using the round dowel pin on the flywheel to keep track of timing.
It could be a handful to see that opening and the straight line in the plastic cover due to that cooling hoses, and in a turbo model, the turbo by pass valve hose is pretty much covering the whole opening.
